Cosmetic treatment with Dr. Laurie

Cosmetic treatment

This document aims to inform you of the stages involved in your cosmetic treatment.

What is cosmetic treatment and what are the risks?

Cosmetic treatment aims to improve the appearance of the teeth. We can do this by improving the position, shape and shade of the teeth. Everyone’s perception of a beautiful smile is different and therefore we spend a lot of time determining what is beautiful for you! Cosmetic dentistry is not without risk and maintenance requirements. We want to carry out the most biologically kind option for your teeth. Regarding maintenance, like all treatment it can stain, chip and require upkeep so it is important to see your dentist and a hygienist regularly.

Options in Cosmetic dentistry

Option 1: Whitening

We whiten your teeth over a multi visit process with enlighten whitening. We start by producing bespoke whitening trays, we then ask you to whiten at home for 2 weeks and then finally we perform an in chair whitening visit to solidify the final shade.

Option 2: Whitening & Composite edge bonding

We perform whitening as above. Once we have achieved the desired shade we use composite to build up the edges of the worn teeth to improve the shade and lengths.

Option 3: Invisalign & whitening & bonding

This is where we get the teeth in the correct position with aligners, then improve the shade and finally restore the shape of the teeth. This is by far the most common option chosen by our patients.

Option 4: composite & porcelain veneers

Another super common option, composite or porcelain veneers cover the whole front surface of the tooth increasing size, shape and shade of the teeth. So what’s the difference between composite and porcelain? Composite is additive meaning we just place it over your existing teeth, it’s handcrafted in a single visit and we normally quote a 5 year survival. Porcelain is a superior material but is slightly more expensive, this is because it lasts longer, does not pick up stain and has improved aesthetics. It requires minor preparation of the teeth and is a 2 visit process. Some people use composite veneers as a prototype for porcelain veneers.
